History

The Institute for Democratic Education is a nonprofit organization working to promote a democratic culture in Israel. IDE began to operate in the field of education in the mid-1980s and entered the public sphere with increased vigor after the murder of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. The organization became a formal nonprofit organization in 1997.

Over the last 20 years, IDE has worked in different areas of education and in various communities in order to advance its vision of a democratic society based on a democratic culture that is both growing and nurturing growth.

The majority of IDE’s activities focus on accompanying the processes of change in education systems on the municipal or individual level and different educational initiatives and training change agents, primarily in Israel’s social peripheries.

IDE has created operational partnerships with academic institutions both in and out of Israel in order to develop unique learning and research tracks.

In recent years IDE has initiated many successful programs such as: The Bat Yam Model for Individual Education, the Incubator for Educational Initiatives, the Educational Pioneer Program, and the Holon Model for Significant Learning, among others.
